Paracetamol is an analgesic and anti-pyretic drug with weak anti-inflammatory effects. Paracetamol is well absorbed orally and peak plasma concentration occur within 30-60 minutes. Its metabolism is mainly by conjugation with glucuronic acid and sulfate. These conjugates are rapidly excreted in the urine. The half life (t½) of paracetamol is 2-3 hours, and it has a lasting effect for 3-5 hours. Paracetamol is a safe and well-tolerated drug with low incidence of gastrointestinal side effects. It does not affect the acid-base balance, platelet function, or the cardiovascular system.
Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is a pain reliever and a fever reducer. The exact mechanism of action of is not known. Paracetamol is used to treat many conditions such as headache, muscle aches, arthritis, backache, toothaches, colds, and fevers. It relieves pain in mild arthritis but has no effect on the underlying inflammation and swelling of the joint.
