Penicillin V potassium is the phenoxymethyl analog of penicillin G. Penicillin V potassium is the potassium salt of penicillin V. Penicillin V Potassium is designated chemically as 4-Thia-1-azabicyclo [3.2.0] heptane-2-carboxylic acid, 3,3-dimethyl-7-oxo- 6-[(phenoxyacetyl)amino]-, monopotassium salt, [2S-(2α,5α,6β)]-.
Penicillin V potassium is a penicillin antibiotic that fights bacteria.
Penicillin V potassium is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections, scarlet fever, and ear, skin, gum, mouth, and throat infections. It also is used to prevent rheumatic fever (a serious condition that may develop after a strep throat or scarlet fever infection and may cause swelling of the heart valves and other symptoms) from coming back. Penicillin V potassium is in a class of medications called penicillins. It works by killing bacteria
Indication:
Penicillin V potassium Tablets are indicated in the treatment of mild to moderately severe infections due to penicillin G sensitive microorganisms. The following Infections will usually respond to adequate dosage of Penicillin V:
1.Streptococcal infections (without bacteremia): Mild to moderate infections of the upper respiratory tract, scarlet fever and mild erysipelas.
2.Pneumococcal infections: Mild to moderately severe infections of the respiratory tract.
3.Staphylococcal infections - penicillin G sensitive: Mild infections of the skin and soft tissues.
Precautions:
Penicillin should be used with caution in individuals with histories of significant allergies and/or asthma.
Prescribing Penicillin V Potassium Tablets in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection of a prophylactic indication is unlikely to provide benefit to the patient and increases the risk of the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
The oral route of administration should not be relied upon in patients with severe illness, or with nausea, vomiting, gastric dilatation, cardiospasm or intestinal hypermotility.
Dosage
Take 125 mg to 500 mg by oral route every 6 to 8 hours
Warning:
1.Keep out of reach of children.
2.Do not permit water runoff from feedlots to enter lakes, streams or ponds.
3. Do not contaminate water by direct application or the improper disposal of drug containers.
Dispose containers in an approved landfill or by incineration.
