Fluocinonide ointment is the generic variety of a topical steroid cream that is prescribed for the treatment of certain skin conditions. The ointment helps to reduce chemical actions produced by the body that result in redness, inflammation and swelling of the skin. Fluocinonide ointment may be used to treat symptoms caused by allergic reactions, eczema and psoriasis, as well as other skin irritations.
Fluocinonide ointment is a prescription corticosteroid suspended in a specially formulated base of glyceryl monostearate, propylene carbonate, white wax and other ingredients. The active ingredient in fluocinonide ointment is fluocinonide.
Effects
Fluocinonide ointment should only be used to treat the specific skin disorder for which it was prescribed and only be used as directed by a physician. Because covering the affected area with a bandage or other wrapping may increase the body's ability to absorb the ointment, patients should not cover the affected area without the doctor's specific instruction to do so.
Function
Topical corticosteroids such as fluocinonide ointment are typically applied to the affected skin two to four times each day, according to the directions of the attending physician. Adverse reactions to fluocinonide ointment are categorized as mild, with the most frequently reported symptoms being burning, itching, dryness and irritation at the application site.
Fluocinonide cream usp 0.05% is intended for topical administration to treat a variety of skin conditions. It's typically used to treat skin rashes that are caused by allergies, itchy or inflamed. It should not be used to treat skin rashes that have become infected. It works by reducing inflammation of the skin.
The active component in each is the corticosteroid fluocinonide and the concentration 0.05% is the common prescription concentration. Each gram of Fluocinonide cream usp 0.05% contains the following ingredients; 1, 2, 6-hexanetriol, citric acid, glycerine, polyethylene glycol-3350, polyethylene glycol-8000, propylene glycol and stearyl alcohol. This white cream vehicle is anhydrous, greaseless, non-staining, and completely water miscible. The base offers emollient and hydrophilic properties.
